Dell Revs Up Monster Mobile Workstation
December 1, 2009

Dell brags that the new Precision M6500 is the world's most powerful mobile workstation -- the first to offer 3D designers, animators, engineers, and defense and research scientists the speed of Intel's Core i7 CPU and Nvidia's Quadro FX 3800M graphics, with four DIMM sockets accommodating up to 16GB of 1066MHz or 1333MHz memory or 8GB of ultra-fast 1600MHz memory.

Starting at $2,749 with a Core i7-720QM 1.6GHz quad-core processor; 17-inch, 1,440 by 900 screen; and 1GB ATI FirePro M7740 graphics, the 8.5-pound Precision can accommodate two 500GB hard drives or 256GB encrypted solid-state drives. Top-of-the-line options include Intel's 2.0GHz Core i7-920XM Extreme Edition CPU and Nvidia's Quadro FX 3800M with 128 CUDA parallel computing cores and a 256-bit interface to 1GB of GDDR3 graphics memory, as well as a 1,920 by 1,200 edge-to-edge RGB LED display with 100% user selectable color gamut support.

Since the workstation market is all about hardware certification by independent software vendors (ISVs), Dell touts the M6500 as certified on more than 95 popular applications from more than 35 key ISVs, including Adobe, Schlumberger, and Dassault Systemes.
